This 1921, Mayan-inflected Frank Lloyd Wright house was originally built as a “progressive theatrical community” space by activist and oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. Today it’s the centerpiece of Barnsdall Park and is open for tours during the park’s popular Friday night wine tasting events. He was the one who decided on their profession, sending them off to MIT and then demanding they move out to Pasadena once they graduated. No word on whether he determined their style as well, but no matter who the progenitor, this graceful house originally built for one of the heirs of the Proctor & Gamble fortune remains one of the best examples of their work. However you decide to experience it, don’t miss the remarkable zig-zag staircase, a joyous element that adds a bit of fun to the perfection of the house. Welcome to My House is a captivating and impactful song that was released by Nu Breed and Jesse Howard.

The song captures the essence of a life lived on the frontiers of society, where the rules are different, and survival depends on strength and unity. “Welcome to My House” starts with the lines, “Y’all what’s comin’ in / And now you’re backin’ out”. This isn’t just about physical defense; it’s about standing your ground, a metaphor for life’s battles.

The shotgun in the lyrics is more than a weapon; it’s a symbol of the resolve to protect what’s dear at any cost. Joanna holds a BSc in English Literature and uses her expertise in literary analysis to uncover the deeper meaning of her favorite songs. The second verse touches on the realities of living in a world where self-defense may be necessary. Nu Breed sings, “I got a baby girl inside this house, and right now she’s sound asleep. Hale House Los Angeles, California Wikipedia

hale house

The Lincoln Avenue Methodist Church was designed by George W. Kramer in the Methodist non-axial style — where the entrance opens on one corner of the building, directly across from the pulpit (some would call it L-shaped). It was built in 1897 at the corner of Orange Grove and Lincoln Avenue in Pasadena. The house, built in the Queen Anne-style and decorated with varying shades of green, red, and yellow, includes fish-scale shingles, turret, and iron grillwork. The Salt Box was one of the last homes on Bunker Hill, and one of the first moved to the Heritage Square Museum grounds. The Hale House was built in 1887 by George W. Morgan, a land speculator and real estate developer, at the foot of Mount Washington just a few blocks from the museum in Highland Park in Los Angeles. The Lincoln Avenue Methodist Church was built in 1897, located at 732 North Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena.

Designation

During the renovation of the house, chips of the original colors were found on the house. The exterior, which is mostly pink and teal, was painted with colors that were duplicated from the original colors that were found on chips on the house. The interior has been restored to recreate the appearance that it is believed to have had in 1899, but many of the house's original interior features remain intact. The Hale House and other old Los Angeles landmark structures are open for public tours, for a fee, at the Heritage Square Museum.

This recreated building contains the original fixtures, a vintage soda fountain, and many unique products sold by the drugstore when it was open — a collection made up of more than 80,000 different items, all generously donated by the Simmons family. In 1967, after the original congregation merged with another, the building served as a community center before being moved to Heritage Square for preservation in 1981. But it’s called the Hale House after its second owners, James and Bessie Hale, who bought it at its second location at 4425 North Pasadena Avenue.

Hale House the Crown Jewel of Heritage Square Museum

Heritage Square Museum is a wonderful place to visit — especially if you’re a Los Angeles history buff. Its also notable for the coral tree, the official tree of Los Angeles, that stands in front of the house and made the journey to Heritage Square from its original location on Johnston Street. The building was initially constructed around 1875 at the halfway point between Los Angeles and Santa Monica in a part of town that’s known today as Palms. The Hale House, along with Charles and Ray Eames Case Study House #8 and Raphael Soriano's Case Study House 1950, has been described by Reyner Banham as one of the three seminal postwar California houses.

L.A. Storyhood

Jack Smith, who had been an advocate of the home's preservation, attended the midnight moving of the house in July 1970. He later wrote that a "motley and festive" crowd gathered to watch, with cries of jubilation rising when the chimneys survived the move. The house has been called 'picturesque eclectic,' meaning its designer took a scroll from here and a fleur-de-lis from there and put everything together with romantic abandon. … Because of its eclectic nature, the Hale house is said to embody, in one package, many architectural inventions of the late 19th century, that buoyant and capricious era. It has been described as "the most photographed house in the entire city", and "the most elaborately decorated". In 1966, it was declared a Historic-Cultural Monument, and in 1972 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Designed in the Carpenter Gothic and Queen Anne styles, the floor plan also follows the Methodist tradition of non-axial plans. This plan, with the entrance in one corner and the pulpit in the opposite, is known as the Akron style, having originated in Akron, Ohio. Now, this is one of those houses that has had a lot of living within its walls, and there seem to be many spirits in the house, including an adolescent girl. During several sessions with the PX, the home was alive with characters coming through to speak with us.

The definition of edges created by shadows was also economical, as expensive trim could be removed from the design. Though the exterior of the house is glass, steel, and concrete, the interior features more natural materials and wood ceilings. Naturally, after he bought a piece of property along San Pasqual Street in Pasadena, he built his second octagonal house, now known as the Longfellow-Hasting Octagon House, on this lot in 1893.

Kristaps Porzingis needs to play much better for the Boston Celtics to beat the Miami Heat

The Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument program, established in 1961, could evaluate properties and list-register them, but not protect them. In 1969, at the request of the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission, a group of concerned citizens established the Cultural Heritage Foundation to counteract this destruction. The Foundation organized Heritage Square as a last-chance haven for architecturally and historically significant buildings to be moved to, which otherwise would have been demolished at their original locations. The museum focuses on interpreting the years 1850 to 1950, a century of unprecedented growth in Los Angeles. Volunteer interpreters give thorough tours that incorporate the history, architecture, and culture of the region.

The exterior and interior of the house is richly adorned with much of Ford’s unique carving work. Probably the the most recognized building at Heritage Square — and certainly the most colorful — the Hale House dates back to 1887. Built for land baron George W. Moran, it was originally located at 4501 North Pasadena Avenue (now known as Figueroa Street) on the border of Highland Park and Mount Washington — not too far from where it sits today. Eight historic buildings from the Victorian heyday of Los Angeles are preserved along the banks of the Arroyo Seco in Montecito Heights. The Mount Pleasant House was built in 1876 by prominent businessman and lumber baron William Hayes Perry.

The house was moved to Allen Avenue in 1917 where it stayed until 1986, when it avoided demolition by moving, again, this time to the Heritage Square. According the museum’s pamphlet, it’s the only “substantially unaltered Victorian-era house in California” and one of fewer than 500 octagon houses left in the United States. It is located at Heritage Square Museum, a complex of nine historic buildings where the newest methods of construction and restoration are used to preserve the oldest brick & mortar structures on Homer Street. The carriage barn was built in 1899 on the grounds of what is now Pasadena's Huntington Memorial Hospital for Dr. Osborne, a member of the hospital's staff. It has three gables and a distinctive pitched roof. The barn was saved from demolition and moved to the Heritage Square Museum in 1981.

Typically, volunteers dig into their own pockets to help museums stay open and afloat. The house that launched architect Craig Ellwood's career and the first building he designed after establishing his own practice in 1949, described as one of three seminal postwar California houses. An example of Greek Revival style, Mount Pleasant is the largest house at Heritage Square. It was moved to the grounds in 1975 and donated to the museum in 1995 by the Colonial Dames of America. Notable for its distinctive mansard roof, a design Napoleon III utilized when creating the roofs of buildings along Parisian boulevards, the house first stood on Mozart Street in Lincoln Heights. It later moved to 1926 Johnston Street before it made the journey to Heritage Square in 1970.

The PX was sitting on a table and saying “cards,” “frog,” and “rabbit”—toy items actually on the table as one of the home’s displays. Colonial Drug is a a recreation of an actual Highland Park drugstore owned by George W. Simmons. The original Colonial Drug was located at the corner of Avenue 57 and Figueroa Street (then Pasadena Avenue), the same spot where Owl Drug once operated (and is now home to Owl Bureau, a bookstore/advertising agency). Simmons’s shop opened after World War I and served the community well into the 1970s. But this particular house is noteworthy because it was owned by one John J. Ford — a well-regarded woodcarver of the day. His work is on display in the California State Capitol and at Hawaii’s Ioliani Palace on O’ahu — as well as the private railway car of one Leland Stanford (yes, that Stanford).

Hale House was saved from the wrecking ball at the 11th hour by the Heritage Square folks at the cost of $1. Originally built at the cost of $4,000 (a small fortune back in the day), the Hale House had been moved a total of three times. The Ford House was built in 1887 as part of a large tract of simple middle-class homes in downtown Los Angeles built by the Beaudry Brothers. The home is particularly interesting because of its inhabitant – John J. Ford, a well-known wood carver. Ford's works include carvings for the California State Capitol, the Iolani Palace in Hawaii, and Leland Stanford's private railroad car. Because of his occupation, the exterior and interior carvings were all done by hand in ornate, one-of-a-kind patterns.

The chimney is characteristic of the high Victorian 'town house' of the period, and the workmanship compares with that of the best built mansions on the old Bunker Hill. The modular, cubic design of the house revealed – and celebrated – its steel-frame structure. Unlike traditional house styles, with windows and doors cut into the centers of walls, Ellwood's design uses only intersecting horizontal and vertical planes, some solid and some glass. To emphasize the drama and depth of the vertical and horizontal lines, Ellwood designed all walls to meet with slightly projecting edges or overhanging roofs. This created the shadow line, a dark contrast at every plane that became a signature element of Ellwood's future designs.

Experience the most advanced braking system for RVs on the market today. Grand Design RV is committed to providing top-of-the-line recreational vehicles for your family's enjoyment. With floorplans that are both spacious and packed with luxurious features, we know you'll find the perfect fit for your next road trip or camping adventure.

It combines luxury, value, and towability in an effort to provide the customer with one of the best trailers on the road. In partnership with highly renowned Lippert—manufacturer of high-quality RV componentry—Grand Design RV helped develop an anti-lock braking system designed exclusively for travel trailers. We would like to share what sets Grand Design RV apart from all other RV manufacturers and why this difference is important to you. My close friends and I were part of an ownership team at a travel trailer, fifth wheel company that grew to become one of the largest RV manufacturers in the world. While proud of this accomplishment, it became difficult to stay in touch with customers, employees, and ultimately the quality of the final product. As our most sizable fifth wheel, the Solitude collection is the ultimate combination of spacious floorplans, smart and flexible use of space, and elegant amenities.

That includes partnering with component manufacturers in the RV industry to include specific technologies that are beneficial for Grand Design RV’s trailers. Most Grand Design RV trailers include fully implemented solar packages, with a roof-mounted panel, charge controller, and inverter prep. The Momentum lineup of toy haulers combines loads of livable space with large, multi-use garages. The fifth wheel lineup from Grand Design offers much of what you find in the travel trailer lineup, but bigger—often with more space inside as well. The Grand Design Reflection combines luxury, value, and towability in one amazing —  best-in-class — package. The quality and service you have come to expect from Grand Design have made the Reflection a tried, true and trusted name in North America.

Their exclusive Racetrack Ducting system is designed to ensure the most efficient cooling possible. It’s based on the Solitude and offers much of the space at a lower cost. The 150 Series of the Reflection offers the best of the Reflection with greater towability. In the 100 Series, you’ll find all of the Reflection’s best features, but with greater towability and a lower price-point. The Imagine XLS offers everything the larger Imagine does, only in a smaller footprint and wider towability options. The following are some of Grand Design RV’s most popular units, and each is a top seller.

Imagine’s design has been put to the test in extreme temperatures ranging from a frigid 15 degrees to a scorching 100 degrees. Third party extreme testing showed that the Imagine remained functional and achieved very comfortable temperatures. During the event, students gained exclusive access to Grand Design’s facilities, immersing themselves in the RV industry and exploring its countless possibilities. They were encouraged to think creatively and engage in discussions about potential startup ventures. These units are made to bring your friends and family along on the trip of a lifetime but require a powerful truck to tow them.

They focus on building travel trailers and fifth wheels and put as much emphasis on customer satisfaction and service as they do on construction quality and innovation in the industry. You can choose from a variety of garage sizes to fit your favorite toys, coupled with flexible and luxurious living spaces. Momentum units range between 16,800 and 6,400 pounds, 26’11” to 46’8.5” in length, and 12’1” to 13’6” in height - all with comfortable features for families of any size.

FULLY CUSTOMIZED MENUS

The name is a tribute to Morfogen’s father who had five Chelsea Chop House restaurants from 1955 to 1985. Brooklyn Chop House plays on the double meaning of the word ’chop.’ From chop steaks, to chop sticks, Stratis married what made him a well-known name in the industry with Philippe Chow and Jue Lan Club. He has taken the best of those two menus and / combined them with Steakhouse classics like dry-aged day Prime Steaks including a Porterhouse for 2, NY Strip and Bone-in Ribeye. The game-changer and uniqueness of Brooklyn Chop House’s menu came home by taking the staples from his father’s Hilltop Diner, such as Pastrami, Lamb Gyro, the Reuben, Philly Cheesesteak, Bacon Cheeseburger and French Onion Soup and turning each into dumplings.

Following in his family’s tradition of owning restaurants, Stratis Morfogen always knew he would eventually shape the future of New York’s hospitality industry. Stratis was nominated “Entrepreneur of the Year” in 1999 by Deloitte & Touche for bringing New York’s famed Fulton Fish Market to the internet in 1997 with the creation of FultonStreet.com. Stratis won numerous awards in customer service for that endeavour, which was highlighted in the New York Times Best Selling Book ”Customers.com” by Patricia Seybold. Stratis made his most significant mark in the hospitality industry by creating, designing and developing Philippe, a chic and sophisticated yet unpretentious Chinese restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, with chef Philippe Chow in 2005. Boston Celtics 1984 reunion: Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, and Cedric Maxwell are together again

The Heritage Square Museum in Los Angeles is a community of Victorian-era buildings saved from demolition and moved to their present location, where they have been lovingly restored in an effort to educate people about what life was like in the city during the 1800s. Under normal conditions, visitors are allowed to enter the buildings to view the interior designs and craftsmanship. These days, due to Covid restrictions, the doors of the houses are currently closed. However, you can still wander the grounds and take in the fantastic architecture. During the rapid urban expansion of the 1960s, Victorian buildings in Los Angeles were being demolished at an alarming rate.

Structured data

It wasn’t until the following year that two more rescued residences, the Hale House (originally located not far away in Highland Park) and the Valley Knudsen Home (originally located in Lincoln Heights), were moved to Heritage Square and the site was opened to the public. This picturesque structure is an outstanding example of the late Victorian period in Los Angeles. Its prime significance is that it perhaps best embodies the essence of, or the most typical features of, this historical style in one given example. The building incorporates the ornate carving of wood, both inside and out, that is fast disappearing.

Curating the City

Bessie kept the house, opened it up to boarders, and became something of a real estate maven in early 20th century L.A. You will taste the difference in everything from our house-made sauces, our desserts and our made from scratch potato pancakes. Built in 1876 for William H. Perry, lumber magnate, organizer of the Los Angeles Gas Company, and eventual president of the Los Angeles Water Company, The Perry House house stood at Pleasant Avenue (hence its other known name of Mount Pleasant) in Boyle Heights. In 1888 the house was purchased by Stephen Hubbell, the first treasurer of Los Angeles and a founder of the University of Southern California — and the man who donated the property now known as MacArthur Park to the city. It’s also been called a must-see destination for any serious fan of The Doors. Over time the Palms Depot fell into a severe state of disrepair and was scheduled to be demolished.

Lincoln Avenue Methodist Church

Designed by renowned architect Ezra F. Kysor, the home contains detailing to convey the wealth and social status of the family. These elements include Corinthian columns, fine hardwood floors, a sweeping main staircase, and marble fireplace mantles. It was built in the fashionable neighborhood (in the 19th century) of Boyle Heights. The Perry's Mount Pleasant House was considered the finest and most expensive residence to arrive in mid-1870s Los Angeles. Shortly after the move, the house was used as a movie set for a film depicting a house bombed in a war. The house was purchased by James G. Hale and his newlywed, Beret “Bessie” Hovelsrud, in 1901.

This residence, purchased by James and Bessie Hale about 1901, is a wood frame structure having exterior clapboard siding accented with fish scale shingles and cast plaster ornament around the main, east facade windows and pediments. Other notable features include a veranda at the northeast corner having turned wood posts with curved wood bracket caps and milled ballusters and an ornamental iron rail on its roof. It has brick chimneys with incised geometric detail and corbelled projections at top and a second floor turret window at the southeast corner, also curved wood brackets at the second floor cornice. The Cultural Heritage Commission simply did not have funding for such a project. They successfully raised the funds and were able to move the two Bunker Hill homes to the Montecito Heights site. Sadly, however, after all the trouble to trying to save and move the two structures to their new haven, they were destroyed in a fire.

It remained in the Hale Family until it was acquired by the museum in 1970, as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument (No. 40). The exterior colors of Hale House were reproduced from chips of the original colors found on the house during restoration. The interior has been restored to represent the rooms as they may have appeared in 1899.

Other specialized living history events, lectures, and items of historical interest are given on a periodic basis. The long-term vision for the site was to be a living museum featuring homes, a church, train depot, bandstand and “downtown” area with a bank, general store, ice cream parlor, firehouse, restaurant, trolley barn and transportation museum. The story of the museum began during the rapid growth of Los Angeles during the 1960s, when 19th century buildings were quickly being demolished to make way for new development. When the last two residences on Bunker Hill, “Donovan's Castle” and the “Saltbox,” faced demolition, the City of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission (a city agency) sought to save them. They hoped to move the homes down the hill to an open space between Olive and Hill Streets next to Angels Flight railway. Los Angeles Councilman Art Snyder then proposed moving the homes to a strip of parkland alongside the Arroyo Seco Parkway in Montecito Heights.

Today it serves as the museum’s workshop, but there are plans to restore it as a working carriage barn. In 1969, to help stop the widespread destruction of historic Victorian homes across Los Angeles, a group of preservation-minded folks formed the Cultural Heritage Foundation at the request of the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission. This group, in turn set up the Heritage Square Museum, a place where buildings of significant historic value could be preserved, restored, and showcased. On December 7 & 8, 2013 Heritage Square introduces guests to nostalgia through the ages at an annual event called Holiday Lamplight Celebration. Witness the past become the present to the glow of Victorian homes lit by the aura of lamplight.

James Hale met Bessie, a farm girl from Nebraska, at the Pio Pico House she was waitressing in. The two fell in love, got married, and purchased the Hale House to live in; however, a few years later, the couple separated and Hale died from a heart attack on August 15, 1921 at age 51. She operated the house as a boarding house until the late 1950s and lived there until she died in 1966 at age 97.

Money from fund-raising (which must compete with cancer research and feeding the hungry) is always in short supply. Some buildings, such as the Lincoln Avenue Methodist Church, have patiently stood in significant need of restoration for decades and cannot be opened for interior tours. Even the beautifully restored homes, as with any home (especially those more than a century old), are a constant maintenance challenge. The Queen Anne-meets-Carpenter Gothic cottage was built in 1899 at the Huntington Memorial Hospital for one Dr. Osborne and was designed to hold two horses and one carriage.

Heritage Square Museum is a living history and open-air architecture museum located beside the Arroyo Seco Parkway in the Montecito Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, in the southern Arroyo Seco area. The living history museum shows the story of development in Southern California through historical architectural examples. Hale House is a Queen Anne style Victorian mansion built in 1887 in the Highland Park section of northeast Los Angeles, California. It has been described as "the most photographed house in the entire city", and "the most elaborately decorated".[2] In 1966, it was declared a Historic-Cultural Monument, and in 1972 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Costumed actors reminisce about Christmases of their youth and how they compare to today’s traditions in this annual celebration honoring the museum’s existence. Tickets are limited for the event (see  heritagesquare.org), but you can do an incredibly good deed by making a small donation,  joining or giving a gift membership to your favorite California museum this holiday. Buying merchandise from their catalogs and gift stores also helps support them. While Salvation Army bell ringers volunteer for special causes, the state’s historical museums are often overlooked as charity recipients.

There’s a place for collections of furniture, but most of the time they’re better broken up and used separately. In our dining room, I’ve added a beautiful patterned blue and white rug that I still love. I’ve always loved vintage art as well as abstract modern art, so we have a mix of that around our house.

The vintage buffet from probably the 50’s is a good mix with this newish Empire style dining table and new upholstered white linen chairs. I love a good mix, which is much more interesting than matchy-matchy collections from the furniture store.
